Short Hair
Sometimes a shorthaired coat will occur rather than the longer curls and beard of a typical Lagotto. It is not very common and many breeders do not talk much about it as it is such a rare occurrence. Short/straight coated dogs are healthy in other respects, although they may be more prone to shedding. This is not a disease but simply a trait that does not conform to the UK/FCI Breed Standard.
The Swiss Lagotto Club has an interesting article explaining their experience of the condition and that there is a genetic test available. The idea with this article is to put light on the shorthaired Lagotto and inform and play down the occurrence of this rare event.
You can find out more about the testing for this condition at Laboklin Laboratories (UK). The test is known as 'Furnishing' Test Number 8195.
There is also an excellent article (on Page 5) with photographs in the Lagotto Club of America newsletter, written by Hilarie Gibbs-Sykes, Chair of the Committee on Breed Health and Education.
The following laboratory (Optigen) has further information about 'Improper Coat'.
