Although the Lagotto is an ancient breed, few serious health problems exist in the breed other than those suffered by most other breeds of dogs. While fortunately not wide-spread in the breed, hip dysplasia, eye conditions and poor temperament, or shyness, are the main issues of greatest importance to puppy buyers
The exception to this is Juvenile Epilepsy(BFJE), which is known to exist in the breed, and which can be identified by DNA testing the parents/ancestors, so that breeders can avoid producing affected puppies.
The LRA strongly encourages responsible breeders to test for health conditions before breeding adults and to make every reasonable attempt to plan litters with a view to avoiding or reducing the risk of passing inherited problems to puppies. Please look at the Buying a Puppy guide elsewhere on this website for inherited conditions.
In the UK, the Kennel Club (KC) works closely with the British Veterinary Association to ensure that dogs are health tested. Read more about the comprehensive Health Schemes, available to all breeders, operated by the British Veterinary Assocation (BVA).
Currently Hip and Elbow scores are recorded by the KC Health Database. The KC have also advised that there is move to be able to record all Lagotto eye tests in the not too distant future. Similarily, there is a possibility for Juvenile Epilepsy to be recorded in the future too.
