Hip Dysplasia
The Lagotto is a light framed dog and for that reason there is no clear evidence to suggest that this is an inherited problem in the breed. Some developmental conditions can be caused or exacerbated by injury, environmental factors, poor diet or management in the juvenile stage. However, breeding from dogs with high scores (a total of 20 would be considered relatively high scoring in the Lagotto) may increase the risk of producing affected offspring and in turn can potentially cause arthritic changes and pain in an affected dog.
When tested, each hip is scored and reported as (for example) 5:5 = 10.
The lowest score is 0(zero) and the maximum 106.
Dogs with high scores may demonstrate lameness at an early age.

Existing BVA test results in the UK indicate that the Breed Mean Score is 12, however only a percentage of the UK population has been x-rayed and scored, so this can only be used as a guide when discussing test results with breeders.
