Dog showing is the most popular form of canine competition in this country – for pedigree dogs to compete for prizes within their breeds and in any-variety competition, based on how closely they conform physically and temperamentally to the Kennel Club Breed Standard. Conformation is another title often used for this canine activity.
Showing is an opportunity for breeders to measure the quality of their dogs against other kennels and in the long term, helps them to maintain a high standard when planning future litters. The various levels of competitions open to exhibitors are described in full within the pages of each show schedule - either Limited (e.g. restricted by Breed), Open (to a number of breeds, but classes scheduled for several individual breeds) or Championship – often held over several days and where dogs can work towards a Kennel Club champion title by winning the best of their sex, or best of their breed. At this show level, dogs are able to compete to gain a qualification for entry to Crufts, which is a prestigious annual canine event and recognised world-wide for the standard of dogs that attend. Judges at the shows undergo a lengthy training programme in order to judge at Kennel Club events, so they are equipped to assess the entry of dogs being exhibited under them and once evaluated, place them in their order of preference at the end of each class. The main websites for entering your dogs into the shows being held are Higham Press and Fosse Data. We have provided links for you to follow below. It is straightforward to enter dogs at these sites once you have set up an account. In preparation for attending a show, it is necessary to train your dog to be examined by a judge, to be compliant in being handled and placed in position by you (as handler) and to move correctly around the ring so that a judge is able to fully assess your dog’s attributes. Seek out a local Ringcraft class and ask your breeder or a LRA Committee Member for assistance in other areas you may need help, such as grooming, equipment and etiquette. The LRA Championship Show, being held on 18th May 2024 at the Kennel Club Buildings, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, is the perfect opportunity to meet up with other Lagotto owners. You will see many lovely dogs in one place and be able to watch the whole process of showing throughout the day at the various levels of show competition. The first Lagotto Romagnolo Association Championship Show will be held in conjunction with a breed restricted Open Show and Special Classes. This event is a landmark for the breed and open to all owners and future owners to attend. Please check out the News area on this website for further information. |
