Rally is a canine activity derived from the heelwork elements of competitive obedience. However, it differs from obedience, primarily in that competitors and dogs attempt a preset course with signs placed at up to 18 stations along the course, requiring them to perform one of around 80 different preset exercises at the higher levels. The first levels are based around regular foundation skills being taught by trainers around the country and many competitors are able to start entering at this level without first finding a Rally Trainer. It is a very inclusive hobby, enjoyed by owners of many different breeds and type of dogs.
The selection of exercises and design of the course is at the judge’s discretion. Each individual round is performed at a brisk pace and takes around three minutes. At level 1 and 2, the first two levels, dogs compete on lead and a loose lead is emphasised. The handler may give verbal commands and encouragement throughout as necessary. More advanced levels require dogs to compete off lead.
Downloadable rally signs and all information you will need to find a trainer and prepare to enter shows is available at the kennelclub.org.uk/events-and-activities/rally section and also at Rally News on Facebook or at www.rallynews.co.uk.
The LRA holds Rally Shows from time to time and the next scheduled event is being held in conjunction with our Championship Show on 18th May 2024 at The Kennel Club Buildings, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. Follow our Events section for further information.
